Garni

The Temple of Garni is the only standing Greco-Roman colonnaded building in Armenia and the former Soviet Union. An Ionic pagan temple located in the village of Garni, Armenia, it is the best-known structure and symbol of pre-Christian Armenia.
Jane Marie and I had lunch at the Garni Temple in April 2019

Lavash is a soft, thin unleavened flatbread made in a tandoor and eaten all over the South Caucasus, Western Asia and the areas surrounding the Caspian Sea. Lavash is one of the most widespread types of bread in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey.

Pokr Vedi

Located 32km south of Yerevan at the foot of Mt Ararat, this village is best known as the home of one of Armenia’s major pilgrimage destinations, the monastery of Khor Virap (Deep Dungeon).

Alaverdi

Jane Marie picked a jewel home stay in Alaverdi, Armenia, the Palma B&B. Getting up there – Alaverdi is on the shores of Debed river canyon 1000 meters above sea level, surrounded by high mountains and green forests – we we’re rewarded with a Bilderberg terra cotta style estate home. Book the cottage for a week and cater in: Tolma, harisa, lahmajo, potato, plech, qyabab, lavash, gata

Alaverdi Monasteries Haghpat, Sanapin & Akhtala

The location of Haghpat Monastery was chosen so that it overlooks the Debed River in northern Armenia’s Lori region. It was built, not on a peak, but halfway up a hillside on a site chosen to afford protection and concealment from prying eyes and also in response to a kind of monastic humilityy.

The name Sanahin literally translates from Armenian as “this one is older than that one”, presumably representing a claim to having an older monastery than the neighboring Haghpat Monastery

Akhtala (meaning Copper mine Monastery) is a 10th-century fortified Armenian Apostolic Church monastery located in the town of Akhtala on the way to Yerevani, The monastery is currently inactive. The fortress played a major role in protecting the north-western regions of Armenia and is among the most well preserved of all in modern Armenia.[
Alaverdi is a copper mining area and the
Akhtala monastery has the best murals.
